Talking to the press
Print shops are one of the last service counters where a stranger will solve your problem in five minutes — if you speak their three words. Ask for Sheets, not pages: a “sheet” can be two-sided or cut into four. Ask for Finishing — stapled, spiral-bound, comb-bound or folded changes both price and how long it takes. And always ask whether they prefer a file emailed ahead; it skips the USB-stick shuffle entirely.
For anything with exact colours — a poster, a cover — request a single proof sheet before the full run; every shop here will do one for pennies. For standard black-and-white documents there’s nothing to prove: any laser machine from any era produces the same crisp result, so pick whoever is closest and cheapest.
Questions people ask
What should I bring to a print shop?
The finished PDF, not the editable original. A PDF prints identically everywhere; a Word file gets re-flowed by whatever version of Office the counter runs. Bring it on a USB stick or email it to yourself — most chains also take uploads through their own portals ahead of time.
How much does printing cost?
Ballpark US pricing: libraries run 10–25¢ per black-and-white sheet; self-serve chain machines 12–25¢; staffed colour runs $0.50–$1.50 per page; binding adds $3–$8; posters are quoted by square foot. Online presses undercut everything except libraries — at the cost of several shipping days.
Why doesn’t this page show shops on a map directly?
Every embedded map requires an API key and sends your location to that provider’s servers. We’d rather hand the search to whichever maps app you already trust — the buttons above open Google Maps, Apple Maps or OpenStreetMap centred on your area, with no middleman.

This directory covers national chains and well-known online presses — independent copy shops number in the thousands and change often. The local search row exists precisely for them; it usually surfaces a family-run shop cheaper than any chain within a few blocks.
